Is dark energy not thermodynamics?

So, as i'm watching a documentary describing thermodynamics and how energy is transferred from one thing to another it shined a light on some similarities of an all too familiar topic which proceeded to pop up in my head. The way heat worked seemed to explain why everything is flowing away from each other as the universe expands. I would not be so bold as to assume that I have just discovered what dark energy is while laying on the floor thinking about it. SURELY this must have crossed the minds of physicists, and must have been eliminated as a culprit by some profound mathematical equation. However, it persists in my mind as a possibility I and felt my thoughts had to be shared and recorded before they were lost to the world, or at least to me.

What is heat? Well, heat is energy, or at least it is the transfer of energy from one particle to another. What is energy? as Einstein pointed out in his famous equation describing the relationship between energy and mass, energy and mass are in fact two forms of the same thing. The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy (lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.) always increases, and that heat will always evolve towards a thermodynamic equilibrium (move from hot to cold). on a broad scale this means that entropy always increases everywhere, and that it will always be from a hotter more energy filled area of space to a colder less energy filled space.  A more massive place in space to a less massive place in space. the second law of thermodynamics perfectly describes the universe's tendency to spread out and become thermodynamically equal.

So is energy not simply being transferred from a more dense area to a less dense one? Or does the laws of thermodynamics simply not apply after some point?

Please do not take this to be science fact. I do not know the math, nor have done any math regarding this claim.  it is simply an expression of my thought process by way of my blog.
